Omaha, Nebraska---After three days of watching some of the fastest swimming in history at the U.S Olympic Team Trials, FLA team members Chelsea Britt and Lauren Driscoll are soaking it all in. They have seen National Team sensations Katie Hoff, Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin all break world records. They have witnessed first-hand one of the most exciting races ever in the men’s 400 IM. They have seen 15 year old Elizabeth Beisel make the Olympic team. The two girls, however, have done more than just watch.
Britt led off the racing for FLA the first day of competition with the 100 Butterfly, and went 1:02.2, only one tenth off her previous best time. Not bad for a 13-year old who didn’t even realize she was swimming a race until the first 50 was over. “It was like an out of body experience”, Britt said after the race. “I don’t even remember getting to the blocks or diving in the water. 12,000 fans were there for prelims, and I was so nervous. I was just glad to get the first race done so I could relax.”
Driscoll had the second and third swims for the team, with her first being the 100 back. She clocked a 1:03.3, which was under the U.S. National Junior Team Qualifying time, and a personal best by 5 tenths of a second. “The first 50 meters are just crazy, because you are so excited, but really nervous too. Once the first 50 was over, I felt like I could settle into the race.” She did more than settle. She even split the race, coming home in 31 seconds the last 50 to secure a best time. Driscoll also swam the 200 freestyle Tuesday morning. Although she was off of her time by a second, it was still her second fastest 200 freestyle of her career.
Britt will swim the 200 Fly Wednesday morning, with Driscoll finishing the racing for the club on Friday with the 200 backstroke. You can watch your teammates online at www.nbcolympics.com. There is a live webcast of all preliminaries at the website.
